Kowboy Kom, the group’s vocalist, moved from Montego Bay, Jamaica to Brooklyn, New York with his family when he was still a child. Growing up in New York during the golden era of Hip-Hop, Kom was inspired by hip-hop artists of West Indian descent coming up in Brooklyn, such as Wyclef Jean, Busta Rhymes, and Notorious B.I.G. When he was in the seventh grade, Kom began to write poetry and rhyme. By his early twenties, Kom rose to become one of the nation’s best recognized spoken word artists and emcees, praised for his clever storytelling, signature style, and natural swagger. He has headlined numerous college tours, appeared on BET J, and opened for artists such as Jill Scott, Dwele, and Doug E. Fresh.

Kom stands apart from other emcees in his preference for performing with a live band, rather than just a DJ. A true musician, who himself plays guitar and dabbles in piano, Kom has an intimate understanding of music and infuses his flow with musicality seldom seen in modern hip-hop.

Alexei, the duo’s producer and its one-man band, grew up on stage, dancing and performing music. Born and raised in Russia during the tumultuous years of the Soviet Union’s collapse, Alexei began playing piano and dancing when he was only six. When he was eight, his parents bought the family’s first double-deck boombox and within a few weeks, Alexei was selling mixtapes in his elementary school.

In his teens, Alexei came to the United States as an exchange student and later returned to attend college. Moving to Washington, D.C. after college, Alexei quickly established himself as a prolific songwriter, a gifted producer, and a dynamic DJ, earning airplay on the country’s top R&B stations. Alexei’s unique production style reflects his diverse musical influences. He seemlessly moves from bopping his head to Lauryn Hill and singing along with Sting to ripping Nirvana on his guitar and playing an Ella Fitzgerald love song on piano. In his production, Alexei prefers to build tracks from scratch, playing keys, guitars, bass, and percussion himself rather than relying on samples.

Sorry for the delay....this hiatus was not planned. My laptop was stolen out of my hotel room back in January! Can you believe it? First the appendectomy, then the theft. What was upsetting about the laptop was the hotel staff gave a complete stranger access to my room. Yeah, while I was out checking out the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, someone was in my room jamming to all the great music and videos I had amassed over time. It's been about five weeks and still, no settlement from the hotel. Needless to say, I won't stay with that chain again. Where did I stay? I thought you'd never ask!

Turns out I was the victim of  scam targeting foreign tourists. My personal information was given to an outsider who proceeds to "check in" to my room. No identification is necessary as long as the name and room number are presented by the person requesting access. Even though the staff member admitted that she neglected to verify identification and I lost over $6,000 worth of music, programs, photos, and other persoanl items, Accor Hotels and Ibis Hotels have not compensated me in my loss. I'm telling everyone this so they will be aware of the scams, the lack of security, the negligence of the staff, and most of all, so you can better protect yourself from being in such a predicament. How much is your identity worth? What's the price to pay for allowing someone into your hotel room? Think about it!

Born into a music loving family she immediately learned to appreciate the joy of melody. With her father as a mentor she would travel around to perform along with her brother, and sang in various choirs and groups, until she wrote her first song on her own, November 2006. A star had begun her journey towards the skies.

Still determinately working to develope further in style and expression, Rebekka keeps blessing us with songs that we all can relate to. Inspired by that universal love and divinity that no human can help but to recognize, she writes most of her songs herself. "All kinds of music inspires me, especially soul music from the 1950's. But God, love, life, and my family is my biggest inspiration". Her music stretches into contrasts between the honesty and vulnerability of her lyrics, to the strength of her talent. All of this without getting in the way of catchy hooks, or keeping her humble person from shining through. In short: soothing music to make you feel good.

She is working closely with producers such as Harry West from Bergen and Jonesy for "JNS Beats" in Oslo. She has made great live performances, as well as a couple of international collaborations. Does anyone remember Casserine feat Cato? She came out with this joint around 1994, "Why Not Take All of Me"? Here's the hip hop remix to a song that I loved. Admittedly, the album didn't fare too well but at the time, the single left it's mark on the masses. Maybe she was a victim of the industry, we all know how that goes. I'd like to know when, where, and why . In any case, we hope all is well with Casserine and please enjoy the track.

Raff!!!!!!

Raff: A Scottish/Italian soul singer-songwriter whose beautiful and unique voice brings a fresh sound to the uk urban soul scene.

Poised to release his ep, gotta get it right, Raff has already been getting major support all over the world, but this is definitely not one of those over-night stories. Raff has been perfecting his craft for years, with an ep and album already under his belt, proving that this talent definitely has something to say.

A chance meeting with underground hiphop producer, Yush2k, lead to raffs first foray into the recording world. But until then, the only people who had really heard raff sing were his family: too shy to even call the operator, it wasnt until raff recorded himself singing along to boyzIImens, 4 seasons of loneliness, that he thought, hey, I could maybe do this!. A job as a singing waiter soon brought raff out of his shell, giving him the confidence to really go for his dream - the illusive record contract!

So while singing stevie wonders, as, Yush2k saw something special and asked raff to record his first album and ep, hypnotized - an eclectic mix of street soul, rnb, hiphop beats and jazz. Not only was this raffs first album but his first chance to really express himself, with full writing and executive production credits. Rave reviews from dj mag, metro and straight no chaser followed, with calls from Warner Bros, but raff remained unsigned.

Keen to explore the world of music further, raff also found himself recording for the highly acclaimed Playstation2 series, Grand theft auto (3, vice city, san andreas and liberty city stories). However, his passion for creating his own music drove him on to start work on his follow-up project.

A change of producer found raff working with liam saunders, further establishing raffs own sound - a mix of old skool harmonies, acoustic guitars, live beats and swirly electro sounds. With such a live sound, the new material truly showcases raffs strength - the live performance, where his passion for music becomes clear, proving not only can he write from the soul, but sing from it too. On stage is where raff thrives and his influences can be clearly seen; ranging from the old skool Aretha and stevie, to the nu skool, India arie, erykah badu and Raphael saadiq.

As an artist raff is eager to develop and grow, hoping to, learn from the best in the business. As a result, a series of collaborations with other local unsigned talents have been helping raff to reach wider audiences. A reggae-soaked duet with Glasgows L-marie has been recently getting spins on galaxy fm in Newcastle, and a collaboration with perth mc, shogun, has been earning major support on Radio1xtra, showing raffs versatility and appeal across the board. What is clear, is that raff is here to stay and its only a matter of time before that deal comes his wayspread the word.

  At first, when I started designing an OSW, I thought I would start out with a nice post-disco mix, but a friend of mine from Chicago, DJ, suggested (rather surreptitiously, I might add) that I do a mix with Incognito. Kafele, trumpeter, composer and producer, has been playing the trumpet for over 18 years. The name Kafele (pronounced kuh-FAY-lay) is of Egyptian origin, and means "worth dying for". Born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Kafele was first exposed to jazz by his parents. In fact, he attributes his love and appreciation for the art to his father who often listened to recordings of John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis among others. Later, his brothers and sisters introduced him to Hip-Hop and R&B. As a byproduct of becoming a Chicago resident for about 7 years, Kafele was inundated with lively, upbeat house music. This musically enriched background provided the influences that helped cultivate his unique sound.

While attending Southern University in Baton Rouge, he studied Jazz Music Theory under the leadership of world-renowned jazz artist and educator, Alvin Batiste. During this time, Kafele was establishing a reputation by performing at various venues in Louisiana, Georgia, Texas and Alabama. He collaborated with a group of talented musicians to form The Kafele Bandele Group. This group frequently performed at M's Fine and Mellow Café in Baton Rouge. He also appeared at the Baton Rouge Blues Festival, House of Blues in New Orleans and the internationally acclaimed New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

After earning a degree in Physics from Southern University, Kafele moved to Chicago with plans to expand and elevate his musical career. Following years of hard work his plan is taking off with an untamable force.

In 2003, Kafele officially launched K. Kapano Records, Inc. in which he plans to elevate his own musical career, produce other talented artists, and perpetuate the appreciation of jazz-fusion. Already, he has released his debut album, "Prodigal Moon" which introduces a new genre of music that infuses spontaneous trumpet riffs with pulsating, hypnotic baselines. He calls this music Cool Fusion-a poetic entanglement consisting of the finest elements of jazz and the richness of Hip-Hop and other forms of music.

In addition, Kafele has successfully penetrated the Chicago music scene and has performed in Baltimore, New York, Dallas, Detroit, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and Miami at the venues listed below:

Don't you hate moving? I sure do. This week I'm moving into a new house. Aaaggghh, it's a pain but it has to be done. Before I am finally packed up, I decided to take the few records that aren't boxed up and find my 'Roots'. Speaking with my good friends Trel, Gary, Bauwa, and others, seems the love for house music is as strong as ever. Here is my snippet tape, 27 minutes of some smooth and soulful grooves. I can get down like this!! We start with an intro by Alex Haley, one of my noted heroes. Then we vibe for about 27 minutes...it's short so blame it on the move.

The advent of digital downloading has created a vast medium for musicians to sell their music to the world.  Modern technology has made it possible for independent artists to promote cds to fans all over the globe. Community websites such as Myspace, Hi5,etc., couple with internet radio and popular podcasts to bring beautiful music to the masses.

In the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, many musicians donated proceeds from album sales to victims of this catastrophe. The healing power of music came to the forefront to help those in need. The sincerity of collective artistic efforts was duly noted. What effect would music have on society if it were continually used to garner attention for the less fortunate?  In a digital society, shouldn't digital sales play a major role in fundraising?

We are pleased to announce the launch of our new program Downloads for Dollars. A revolutionary idea, it partners stellar independent musicians with established non-profit organizations . The program has a dual purpose (1) Give deserving artists much needed recognition and a viable outlet to sell their music (2) Provide a continuous opportunity for non-profit organizations to raise money for their stated aims.

STICO VONDRAKE was born in 1972 in Chicago, Illinois. He lost his sight at the age of 7, and was totally blind until the age of 17, at which time he regained sight in his left eye. Stico moved to Richmond, Virginia at the age of 14 due to his motherâ??s job. He graduated from high school in 1993. Instead of college, he took up part time jobs at McDonald's,  Burger King, TIME LIFE, Inc., landscaping companies, etc...,all to support his music career. He is currently devoting 18 to 24 hours a day to changing other peoples lives through the gifts given to him by the Creator. He is a session producer as well as a fluent drum, bass, and keyboard player. Stico has been producing for 12 years. He is currently the sole producer for production company, Buck Buck Productions, located in Richmond, VA. His production artillery includes the Roland VS2480-CD, Roland VS2400, ASR-10, and ASR Rack mount, Ensoniq Workstation MR-76, A Station made by Novation, Ibanez acoustic bass, Fender P-Bass, Fender Fretless J-Bass, all percussions, drums, and acoustic piano just to name a few. It feels so good to be back in the mix! Thanks for everyone who knew my hiatus was all but planned. I've been balancing a lot of projects, some of which took me by surprise with the public response. "Download for Dollars" has taken flight. During the week I've been promoting, calling, networking, explaining, and all things in between. In the end, it will be well worth the grind.

When the schedule gets too hectic, I resort to doing what I know best...playing some sweet , soulful grooves and having a bit of fun with it. Flo is a female artist from the French West Indies. She writes in English, French, and last but not least in her native tongue of Creole. She mixes languages and styles in her own way. A product of her heritage, she writes about her traveling experiences in France, the U.S. and the Caribbean. A young black woman who is not afraid to show her emotions Flo will make you think, dance, and overall offer good steady vibes to your ears. Her sophomore release The Lost Flows mixtape shows what you can experience with Flos music. She drops twenty tracks and unites with fellow South Floridian Creole Hip Hop protagonists Mecca and Dr Zoe on Nap Monte, a Creole anthem in the name of the Kreyol Hip Hop movement in Miami. She brings some flavor to the tape with a surprising Zouk song, or reggae and dancehall tones. Flo is definitely a proof of Hip Hops global horizons of growth. Her first LP, the Aflowdiziak is also available and merits some attention. Flo features on the Pass Di Rhum Riddim album (2004) with international artists like Exxos, Admiral T, Krys, or Tiwony. This year she scores another vibrant song on the international KSS Caribbean sessions with artists like Jocelyne Beroard (songstress of the international sensation Zouk band, Kassav) or the original voice of Jamaica, Tanya Stephens. In the United States, Flo has worked with nationwide artists such as X=144 of TDP, and Sol-Illaquist of Sounds. Flo gets involved in the local Miami community as a photograph and community writer. She also helps up and coming artists to build their visual personality through her graphic works.

From vinyl manipulation on the turntables, to current production of jazz infused hiphop tracks, Crowd Control Records CEO, NickNack is a true soundcraftsman. His musical journey began in the late 80's after making the transition from hiphop spectator to participant. Cutting his teeth from the very beginning as a young appreciative turntablist knocking off rivals at Dallas' Sound Wars battles in the mid-nineties, Nick has worked hard to encompass a broad vision of ability, and a verbose sense of instrumentality, to match his already fruitful passion for music.

These days you can find Nick performing/touring with the jazz band BLAZE, or hear him rocking dance floors at various downtown clubs. Most recently, Nick has been enjoying the success of his latest full length release, "Improving Silence". The record has garnered him international attention and sales have been phenomenal. His progression as an artist and deejay is quite obvious, but his job is never done. Always in exploration of advancing his full turntablist potentials, and with countless projects on the horizon, Nick has grown into a unique artist, in a constant search of endeavors new and improved. Queen Sheba is nothing short of the realness! Spoken word poet, author, educator, hailing the crown on many fronts.  Out of Norfolk, Virginia her resume is loaded so take note, this is just a taste . My brother gave me the cd titled "The Message" and I've been hooked on her wit ever sense. She's as we say when we can't quite explain to another, "deep". Poetry for me is like a language that I can't speak but understand very well. In such instances, I sit back and let one who knows tell the story. It's been almost two years since I began putting the music out. For me the start of it all began by hooking up with the group Slowmo from Sweden. At first we only had a vision which fueled our dream of being heard and appreciated. Today we have arrived and are even more determined to break new ground. This free download of the week comes from the EP "Hidden Souls" and is called 'From A Window'. It is a favorite of radio and podcasters worldwide and has it's noted share of underground success. I've always confessed to having humble beginnings. My journey has been fruitful and my success due in part to many people who have guided me in this music career. None more so than my brother Bekay, aka, the Brass King. Who would have ever thought I'd be in a position to give him a celebrity endorsement? Bekay wears many hats: DJ, producer, promoter, music historian, etc. His knowledge and respect for his craft set the standard for others to emulate.
